ABA THERAPY

ABA is a clinical approved therapy that provides therapy for kids with autism or behavioral issues. It is perfect for kids who have a hard time picking up social cues, or learn typical things that a normal child will pick up through integrating in the environment.  It is a try and fail program which helps the child with prompts and reinforcement to be willing to learn and try harder.

ABA was developed by Skinner when he taught pigeons to press a lever to access their food.  It is also based on conditioned and unconditioned behavior developed by Pavlov when he realized that dogs salivate when a bell rings to signal food is coming.  Skinner and Pavlov both proved that society runs on reinforcement and punishment, and then primary reinforcement such as food or drink can be conditioned into general reinforcement, such as praise or money.      Using reinforcement to reinforce the correct behavior and not the incorrect behavior helps the child learn that it pays to engage in the correct behavior, and it is then generalized to other places and setting.

What to expect in a session:

The child will get one on one therapy at the confines of  his/her home, where the BCBA comes down, evaluates the child, and then provides a program geared for that child.  Every day for a few hours a para professional will come in and do the program with the child.  Data is taken to monitor child’s progress and check if program needs to be changed to the next level.
